Woof - Still Woozy
An analysis by David Russell
Sven Eric Gamsky (aka Still Woozy) is an American indie/alternative singer songwriter that started his musical journey in an alternative rock math band called Feed Me Jack from 2011 - 2016. After four albums and five years together, the band separated on good terms to each pursue their unique styles and desires in the music scene. In 2017, Gamsky released his first single Vacation in 2017 at the age of 25, kick starting his career as an artist under the name of Still Woozy. Gamsky's music has met success with one Platinum and one Gold record for Goodie Bag and Habit.
Woof is an alternative/indie song with inspirations from genres like folk and hip-hop that leaves the interpretation up the listener. The melodic content and variation in ideas presented touch on possible inner turmoil, judgment, and problems possibly faced by the artist, while also presenting the ideas in a lighter upbeat mood with the bright chords and melodies. This juxtaposition conveys complex thoughts with a sense of optimism and a care free attitude.
Woof follows the traditional verse - chorus form, however, with a unique twist to traditional formats. Many artists use four segments in the sections of their songs while Gamsky uses shorter phrasing and repetitions to achieve a simple and catchy composition. While many songs follow an "AABA" format, his music more closely resembles an "AB" or "AA'" pairing. The melody of the bass and vocals are very simple and repetitive with minor variations allowing the song to be catchy without being too complicated. Whenever sections like the chorus are repeated, they use all of the same elements, and because the sections are so short it doesn't seem monotonous or obnoxiously repetitive because the other sections of the song give the listener a break from those ideas. It also helps that whenever instruments are added like guitar, it's not just one guitar, there are multiple guitars added with unique textures to add more depth to the listening experience. Gamsky also adds in various synths pads and vocal adlibs to fill out the texture of the track and blend with with the dynamic drums and vocals throughout.
